When no direct train runs between your origin and destination, Ghumo.Live automatically builds connecting-train combinations via mid-route hub stations — picking a sensible interchange, finding one train per leg, and showing live availability and timing for both legs so you can plan a practical two-leg journey.
Use the dedicated waitlist prediction tool to check “will my WL ticket confirm?” before you book. Ghumo.Live reads live WL movement on the route and returns a Likely / Maybe / Unlikely verdict, so you don’t book a waitlist you almost certainly can’t use.

⚡ How It Works
Ghumo.Live fetches data in real time from Indian Railways' official systems. When you search for trains between two stations, we return live availability, fares, running days, and class options instantly. Each train is scored using a smart algorithm that weighs seat availability, class diversity, journey duration, and departure timing — so the best options appear first. And when direct trains are weak or unavailable, Alternate Routes expands the search to nearby stations, date shifts, and split journeys so you can still find practical options.
🔎 Where Our Data Comes From
Ghumo.Live is a thin, fast layer on top of the same data feeds Indian Railways exposes to its own consumer apps. We do not run a private timetable database, we do not scrape ticket-selling middlemen, and we do not invent or estimate availability. Every live number you see on Ghumo.Live can be traced back to one of the sources below.
- Seat availability & fares — Indian Railways' (IRCTC) public enquiry endpoints. The same numbers you would see if you typed your train and date into
irctc.co.in, just rendered faster and across all 15 dates at once. - PNR status — Indian Railways' PNR enquiry endpoint, called only on demand when you submit a PNR. PNRs are not stored in any user database; they may appear briefly in transient server error logs (e.g. when an upstream parse fails) and are not retained beyond standard log rotation.
- Live running status & GPS position — NTES (National Train Enquiry System), the Indian Railways system that powers the official "Where is my Train" feature. We poll only the train you are currently viewing.
- Coach position & rake composition — NTES coach-position service, cached server-side because rakes rarely change day-to-day.
- Train schedules, route & halt times — Indian Railways' published schedule service plus our own per-train cache.
- Station codes, names, latitude / longitude — derived from the Indian Railways station master file, cross-checked against community-maintained railway atlases for the latitude/longitude pairs we use to compute "nearby stations" for alternate-route suggestions.
We do not bridge to any non-railway data source. There is no third-party "AI prediction" oracle behind our waitlist probability, no aggregator API, and no syndicated content. When NTES is down, our live status page tells you NTES is down — we do not fall back on stale guesses.
🕐 Update Cadence & Cache Freshness
Different surfaces have different freshness commitments. We surface the cache age on most pages so you can tell at a glance whether the number you're looking at is live or recent.
- Seat availability — refreshed on every page load. The 15-day grid is fetched in parallel so all dates land together rather than serially.
- PNR status — fetched on demand; auto re-check (if you opt in) polls in the background and shows you a desktop / mobile notification when the status changes.
- Live running status — polled periodically while the page is in the foreground; paused when the tab is in the background to be respectful of NTES.
- Coach position & rake — cached server-side per train, refreshed automatically the next time anyone views that train after expiry.
- Train schedules & routes — re-validated periodically; immediately invalidated if Indian Railways publishes a notified schedule change.
- Smart ranking, alternate routes, waitlist probability — recomputed on every search using the live availability data, never cached as a stale "yesterday's answer."
👤 Who's Behind Ghumo.Live
Ghumo.Live is an independent project run on a personal basis by developers who travel by train regularly and were tired of opening five different apps to plan a single journey. It started as a personal side project, was opened to the public after months of dogfooding, and has stayed deliberately free of registration, ads-stuffing, and dark patterns since day one.
We do not represent Indian Railways, IRCTC, NTES, the Ministry of Railways, or any railway zone. We have no commercial relationship with any train-booking aggregator or travel agent. Ghumo.Live is a side project, not a venture-funded business — which is precisely why we can keep it lean, fast, and free.

📝 Editorial Standards
The five guides on Ghumo.Live (Tatkal booking, waitlist types, train classes, IRCTC quotas, cancellation & refunds) are written by our team based on direct travel experience and cross-checked against Indian Railways' published rule books (e.g. the Refund Rules 2015 amendments for the cancellation guide, the Conditions of Booking for the quotas guide). Every rule, time window, percentage and surcharge we cite has a primary source. When we are not certain — for example when a circular has been issued but the IRCTC site hasn't reflected the change yet — we say so explicitly rather than picking one version.
We update the guides whenever Indian Railways publishes a rule change that affects the content, and review them periodically even if no change has been notified. We do not auto-generate guide content, do not republish other sites' material, and do not use the same template-with-variables to mass-produce city-pair "articles."
✅ Accuracy, Limits & What We Don't Do
Ghumo.Live is a read-only enquiry tool. We never collect ticket payments, never store IRCTC credentials, and never act as a ticketing intermediary. When you tap "Book," we open the official Indian Railways portal in a new tab with your search pre-filled — the actual booking, payment and ticket issuance happen entirely on IRCTC, under IRCTC's terms.
Live data is shown as received from the source. If IRCTC's enquiry endpoint returns a wrong fare, NTES misreports a train's GPS position, or the Railways' chart preparation is delayed, Ghumo.Live will reflect that — we cannot edit or "fix" data we don't own. We surface the source timestamp wherever we can so you can judge whether the number is fresh enough for your decision.
Things Ghumo.Live deliberately does not do: book tickets, charge money, take commissions, send promotional emails, run retargeting pixels, sell user data, require an account, store PNR numbers, or recommend specific trains for commercial reasons. The smart ranking is an algorithm based purely on the public availability data; no train pays to rank higher.
