How WL Prediction Works

When you search for trains on Ghumo, each train with a waitlisted status shows a confirmation probability badge:

BadgeMeaningWhat to Do
✓ LikelyHigh chance of confirmation based on current waitlist position and cancellation patternsSafe to book — your ticket will very likely confirm before chart preparation
~ MaybeModerate chance — confirmation possible but not guaranteedBook if flexible. Consider backup options or check closer to the travel date
✗ UnlikelyLow chance of confirmation — waitlist position is too highLook for alternative trains, dates, or classes with better availability

Understanding Waitlist Types

CodeFull NameConfirmation Chances
GNWLGeneral WaitlistBest — standard waitlist from origin station, highest cancellation pool
RLWLRemote Location WaitlistLower — for intermediate stations, smaller cancellation pool
PQWLPooled Quota WaitlistLow — short-distance journeys on long-route trains, limited seats
TQWLTatkal Quota WaitlistVaries — depends on Tatkal cancellations, usually fewer cancellations
RACReservation Against CancellationVery high — you get a shared berth, almost always confirms to full berth

Tips for Waitlisted Tickets

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my waitlisted train ticket confirm?

It depends on your waitlist position, the route, class, and how far the travel date is. Ghumo analyses real-time availability to show a probability badge — Likely (green), Maybe (yellow), or Unlikely (red) — for each waitlisted train.

What is the difference between GNWL, RLWL, and PQWL?

GNWL (General Waitlist) is for journeys from the origin station and has the best confirmation chances. RLWL (Remote Location) is for intermediate stations with lower chances. PQWL (Pooled Quota) is for short segments on long-route trains with limited quota.

How does Ghumo predict waitlist confirmation?

Ghumo checks real-time availability across General, Tatkal, and Premium Tatkal quotas. If the waitlist position is low relative to typical cancellation patterns for that route and class, the prediction is Likely. Higher waitlist positions get Maybe or Unlikely ratings.

What happens if my WL ticket doesn't confirm?

If your waitlisted ticket doesn't confirm by chart preparation (approximately 4 hours before departure), Indian Railways automatically cancels the ticket. You receive a full refund minus a small clerks' charge. E-tickets are cancelled automatically; counter tickets need manual cancellation.

Is RAC better than WL?

Yes. RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) means you already have a shared berth — you can board the train. RAC tickets almost always get promoted to a full confirmed berth. WL tickets have no berth assigned and may or may not confirm.
