Train Coach Position & Rake Layout
Find the exact order of coaches in your train — engine to rear — with the platform number at every halt. Stop running across the FOB; know where coach S1, B3, A1 will stop before your train pulls in.
How to Check Coach Position on Ghumo
- Open Ghumo and search for your train by number or name
- Tap the train to open its detail page
- Tap Coach Position to see the rake from engine → rear
- Each station card shows the platform number for that halt — including origin and destination
What You Get
Every coach in order: locomotive, GEN/UR, SL, 3A, 2A, 1A, CC/EC, Pantry Car, Power Car, SLR/Brake Van. Numbered #1 onward from the loco.
Know your boarding platform at every station — origin, intermediate halts, destination. Saves you a sprint at long platforms like NDLS, CSTM, or Howrah.
Position of the dedicated Divyangjan (PwD) coach is highlighted separately for accessible boarding.
Each coach is colour-coded by class — pink (1A), blue (2A), green (3A), amber (Sleeper) — so you can spot your section at a glance.
Coach composition is fetched directly from Indian Railways' NTES system, so it matches what's printed on the platform display.
No app install, no captcha, no account. Just open the page on your phone before your train arrives.

Why Coach Position Matters
Indian Railway platforms are long — Howrah, New Delhi, Chennai Central and Mumbai CSTM all stretch over 600 m. If your reservation is in coach S9 and you're standing at the engine end, that's a 400-metre dash with luggage in 2 minutes of halt time. Knowing the coach position before your train arrives means you wait at the right end of the platform from the start.
It also helps you find:
- Pantry Car if you skipped meal pre-booking and want to walk over
- Charging-friendly coaches — newer LHB rakes have outlets at every berth, older ICF only near the doors
- Divyangjan coach for accessible boarding
- SLR / brake van if you're carrying a cycle or bulky luggage
Frequently Asked Questions
What is coach position in Indian trains?
Coach position is the order in which coaches are attached to the train, counted from the engine to the rear. It tells you where your specific coach (e.g. S1, B3, A1) will stop on the platform so you don't have to run.
How can I find my coach position before the train arrives?
Search for your train on Ghumo and open Coach Position. We show the full rake from engine to rear (including GEN, SLR, Pantry, Power Car) along with the platform number at every station, sourced live from NTES.
Does coach position change for the same train?
Rake composition is largely fixed for premium trains (Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Vande Bharat) but can vary by date for some express trains when an extra coach is attached or detached. Always re-check on the day of travel.
What do coach codes like S1, B3, A1, H1 mean?
S = Sleeper, B = AC 3-Tier, A = AC 2-Tier, H = AC First Class, C = Chair Car, E = Executive Chair, GEN/UR = General/Unreserved, SLR = Brake Van with luggage, EOG = Power Car, PC = Pantry. The number suffix is the sequence within that class.
Can I see the platform number for my boarding station?
Yes. The Coach Position page lists the platform number at every halt — origin, destination and all intermediate stations — so you know exactly where to wait.
Where does Ghumo get coach position data from?
Directly from Indian Railways' NTES (National Train Enquiry System) — the same source that powers the platform display boards. Cached aggressively because rake composition rarely changes.
Is coach 1 always at the engine end?
Yes. Coaches are numbered from the locomotive end (#1) toward the brake van at the rear. So if your coach is #15 in a 22-coach train, it's roughly two-thirds of the way back from the engine.
